Currency Symbols - Definition
Currency is defined as the 'Current value; general estimation; the rate at which anything is generally valued'. The word currency is generally used to describe the system of money used in a particular country, each country has its own monetary system which is also used in foreign exchange markets. Examples of currency include British Pounds, American Dollars and the Japanese Yen.

Currency Symbols - Euro
The Euro (€) is used in many European countries including Spain, Greece, Portugal, Ireland and France. The European Central Bank (ECB) is responsible for the monetary policy of the Eurozone and its member states. On the 1st January 1999, the euro replaced the European Currency Unit (ECU) as the official currency of the European union member states.

Currency Symbol of UK Pound
The pound currency symbol is used used by the United Kingdom and is also often referred to as sterling. Sterling is used in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, all part of the United Kingdom as well as the Isle of Mann, Jersey and Guernsey. The word pound is derived from the Latin word 'Libra' and the term originated in the UK and related to the weight of a pound of silver.

Currency Symbols - Sign for YEN
The Yen (¥) is the unit of currency used in Japan. Yen means 'round' and is pronounced 'en' in Japan. The yen was officially adopted on May 10, 1871. It was a dollar unit and similar to dollars used by other countries it was descended from the Spanish Pieces of eight.
