Tracing Board - Definition
The Tracing Board is an important symbol used to represent members of the society of freemasons. A trace or tracing board is used to explain the principles of masonic beliefs to new members of the lodge. Different images are used for trace boards depending on the level of the freemason, the example below shows a first degree trace board, the image at the bottom of the page is an example of a second degree trace board.

Tracing Board - Use
The image on the right is called a 'Tracing board'. It is an example of a first degree tracing board and contains a number of individual symbols which are used to explain to new members of the lodge the principles of freemasonry. Symbols on the tracing board including:

Fact 1: The ladder which is shown in the tracing board is called Jacob's ladder and it symbolises the path between heaven and earth

Fact 9: A square (instrument of measure for stone masons) is the emblem of the lodge master and represents moral code, it is shown resting against the base of the wisdom pillar

Fact 10: The two stone blocks that appear either side of the centre pillar of the tracing board are particularly symbolic. The masonry block on the left symbolises unformed man whereas the block on the right is symbolic of perfection

Fact 11: The plumb line which appears on top of the complete masonry block is a symbol or emblem of a junior lodge warden
