The pound symbol
represents the currency used by the United Kingdom and is also often
referred to as sterling. Sterling is used in England, Wales, Scotland
and Northern Ireland, all part of the United Kingdom as well as the Isle
of Mann, Jersey and Guernsey. The word pound is derived from the Latin
word 'Libra' and the term originated in the UK and related to the
weight of a pound of silver.

To enter the £
pound symbol on a standard UK keyboard, simply hold down the SHIFT key
and press the number 3. On other keyboards the pound sign can be added
using the ALT key combination ALT & 0163. (Ensure you use the numeric
