Christian Symbols - Meaning
There are many religions worshipped all over the world, one of the the largest of these is Christianity. Christian Symbols are a vital part of the Christian faith, they are objects that followers worship and pray to. They are tools for teaching the religion to others and items are often passed down from generation to generation. Each of the individual Christian religious symbols has its own deep significance.

  • The image shown opposite of a white dove is a popular Christian symbol of the holy spirit
  • Often the Dove is pictured holding an Olive branch, this is a symbol of the grace of god
  • The image at the bottom of the page shows a cross surrounded by seven doves, this image symbolizes the seven gifts of the holy spirit and is an important Christian symbol

Christian Symbols - Crucifixion

Several important Christian symbols are linked to the crucifixion, also known as the passion.

Symbols include a hammer and nails, the implements used to nail Jesus to the cross. A crown of thorns reminds Christians everywhere of the crown that Jesus was forced to wear when he was proclaimed the 'King of the Jews' by the Roman soldiers.

A spear was used to pierce his side ensuring he was dead, all these items have importance in the Christian faith, they remind Christians of the way that Jesus suffered and died on the cross to save them from sin.

Christian Symbols - Star
Stars are also important Christian symbols. The three wise men also referred to as 'Magi', kings of the east and three kings were guided by a star to Bethlehem where they brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the new born king, Jesus. Part of the Christmas nativity story which is celebrated by Christians all over the world recreates the journey made by the three wise men to the stable in Bethlehem. Nativity plays are held in schools and churches all over the world to remind Christians about the birth of Jesus and the importance of Christmas. The Virgin Mary is also often depicted with a halo made up of twelve stars, the following bible verse is taken from Revelation 12:1

"A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head."

  • The Chi-Rho Christogram is one of the best known Christian symbols. An example is shown on the right
  • A Christogram is a monogram or combination of letters that forms an abbreviation for the name of Jesus Christ
  • The symbol is formed by superimposing the first two letters Chi and Rho (ΧΡ) of the Greek word "ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ" which translates to Christ

Christian Symbols - Church
The building where Christians go to worship is known as a church. A church also refers to a group of followers or believers who come together to worship Jesus and the Christian faith. The church is without doubt the most important Christian symbol, always marked on the outside with a cross to identify the building to worshippers. Usually the church building is in the shape of a cross, a constant reminder of Jesus' crucifixion.

Being religious is to have a strong belief, a faith in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny; "he lost his faith but not his morality".
